This is a school in a very strong position. The process of forming and discharging the IEB has dealt effectively with the challenges and problems that had accumulated in recent years.
The new head is in place and has a compelling vision for the future. With a clear direction of travel and sustained demand for places, The Observatory can very rapidly become a beacon of excellence locally, regionally and nationally. The Board wants it to be ‘sector-leading’ and is committed to fully supporting the journey.
Pupil numbers are a key indicator of the health of any school, and there is abundant evidence that this is a sustained step increase. Governors recently took the decision to move to a Group 4 ISR. The planned new OT and sensory facility creates a distinct point of difference for the school, and will be the first NHS-level provision within the local authority. This year’s success in the TES International Award has propelled the school into a much higher level of profile and visibility in the region and beyond.
The Headteacher has embedded strong support for innovation and research-led practice, which adds to the school’s distinctiveness. While the sector has historically focused on SEMH, the cohort of new staff joining this year has meant that the Headteacher has been able to also select for expertise in Social Communication, adding a significant new aspect to the school’s repertoire.
As the school continues to grow, so its operational and educational complexity increases. We therefore seek to add leadership capacity so that we can ensure continued smooth running and high standards, and meet the needs of every young person in our care. The role is the perfect ‘finishing school’ opportunity for someone who is ambitious to become a Head in their own right, and who is looking for a job where they can strengthen their full range of leadership skills in a secure and supportive setting.
